Introduction to the Faculty

Introduction to the Faculty

The Faculty of craft Arts accepted its first handicrafts student in 2001, two years after the establishment of Tabriz University of Islamic Arts in 1999. Since then, the Faculty has been active in expanding the field of Islamic Art through the research and teaching of in the Traditional Arts. In 2005, the Faculty began granting both undergraduate and graduate degrees in Islamic Art with concentrations in glass, ceramics, metal, wood, and painting. With the approval of bachelor's and master's degrees in Iranian painting, the process of admitting students into the faculty painting degree within Islamic art was stopped.

The subsequent separation of the fields of Iranian painting, graphics, and art research within the University led to the reorganization of the Faculty under its present title. The Faculty of craft Arts currently has 10 main faculty members specializing in pottery, glass, metal, and wood.

Educational programs and research policies within the Faculty are designed to develop creativity, increase theoretical knowledge, and improve the practical abilities of students with the ultimate aim of supporting entrepreneurship and employment for its graduates. This emphasis on results-driven education supports students in conceiving, designing, and executing contemporary works of art which draw on their Iranian-Islamic identity.

Students of this college are required to present the findings of their theoretical and research studies in the form of a work of art, accompanied by a dissertation documenting their process from initial idea, through design, to final implementation.

In 2012, after obtaining permission from the Iranian Ministry of Science, Research and Technology, the Faculty of craft Arts began offering a doctoral course in Islamic arts with the dual aim of meeting the scientific needs of the country in the field of Islamic Art and building a comprehensive scientific and cultural map of the country. Five students were admitted through a specialized doctoral exam in the inaugural year.

The PhD program is responsive to the theoretical applications of research and education for artists and focused on presenting Islamic works in the contemporary period, with priority given to the traditional materials of clay, glass, metal, and wood.

The Faculty of craft Arts is the only specialized program for these areas within the field of Islamic arts in the country, with 350 undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students currently enrolled. So far, nearly 500 students have graduated from both undergraduate and graduate schools in the fields of pottery, glass, wood, and metal.

At present, the Faculty of craft Arts offers four undergraduate, three postgraduate, and one doctoral degree programs. It should be mentioned that the master's degree course in glass arts and crafts has been organized by the faculty members of the Faculty of craft Arts and is undergoing the approval process in the Ministry of Science.
